At yesterday's Xbox Developer Direct, one of the studios to showcase their work was Ninja Theory. They obviously showed off a lot more of Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, a game that has been in development since at least before the release of the Xbox Series X|S. It was one of the titles used to promote the, at the time, immenent release of the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
Now, it looks like the wait nearly over as a release date of May 21, 2024 was revealed. Not only that, but when Hellblade 2 releases on Xbox Series X|S and PC, it will be priced at just $50.
There is quite a major catch with all of this though. That catch is the fact that Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 will not get any physical release. This game will be a digital only release, which is a major blow to those that prefer physical media for whatever reason.
The original Hellblade also launched as a digital only title for the Xbox One. It only received a physical release a bit later thanks to 505 Games. While a post-release physical release for Hellblade 2 may be possible, I wouldn't exactly count on it.
Since the release of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Ninja Theory has transitioned from being an independent team to one that sits within Xbox Game Studios. Although this has seen change for Ninja Theory, particularly in terms of the support now available to us for striving towards our ambitions, what has not changed is our passion and commitment to our studio mission – to craft life-changing art with game changing tech.
This might sound like a lofty mission, but it is something we are proud to have achieved before in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – a game built in a space we called ‘Independent AAA’, where we worked with the creative spirit and freedom of independent development but strove for the types of high-end production values often only associated with AAA games.(...)
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will be a game crafted from the heart – a game similar in length to the first Hellblade, with a focused narrative, and sold digital-only at a price of $49.99 USD. And you can once again expect to join Senua in understanding her world through perception puzzles led by her experiences of psychosis, in brutal and visceral combat and in traversal gameplay, this time across the harsh but beautiful landscapes of 10th Century Iceland. Crucially, all these elements are intertwined in a unique visual and audio experience, where everything is in service of Senua’s story. So, you can expect more of the same, but this time with the support to push our ambitions for immersion, fidelity and richness far further than before.

There was some initial concern over the game's length when Ninja Theory initially said that Hellblade 2 would be a "shorter" gameplay experience. It seems clear now that the game is only "shorter" in comparison to many other games that come out these days, and not shorter than the first game.
