Another Embracer owned studio impacted with layoffs.

More unfortunate news from the gaming industry today as a new report from Gamedeveloper.com says that layoffs have hit Gearbox Publishing. The report notes that layoffs have been happening at Gearbox Publishing "throughout the summer and as recently as this week."

This marks the second Embracer Group owned studio to make headlines today. The first was Volition and the unfortunate news of that entire studio being shut down. Earlier in August, Embracer closed down Campfire Cabal.

"No one saw it coming, but my contract and those of my colleagues who started in June had to be terminated," wrote Gearbox Publishing translator Allan Jacquemart in June. "We were simply victims of the group's restructuring."
All of these closures and layoffs come months after a deal worth $2 billion (USD) fell through for Embracer. Embracer and Savvy Games Group had entered into a verbal agreement for the deal in late 2022. Come May 2023, Savvy Games Group reportedly pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

Gearbox began its publishing arm in 2015, with its first published titles being Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and the Bulletstorm remaster. Gearbox Publishing has also published titles such as Remnant 2, Hyper Light Breaker, Risk of Rain 2, and several others.
