Back 4 Blood development comes to an end after three expansions.
Screenshot from a game. There are four characters surrounding a heavy metal door. The door reads "EXIT" and "DANGER RIDDEN" on a couple of signs. The people are holding a variety of weapons. Two are holding assault rifles, one is holding a shotgun, and one is holding a bat with nails protruding from one end.

Turtle Rock Studios say that they will no longer be adding any additional content to Back 4 Blood. They will instead shift their full attention over to creating their next game. This announcement, made in a brief statement earlier today, comes after the release of several updates and three expansions for their zombie-slaying co-op shooter.

While new content won't be released for Back 4 Blood, Turtle Rock says that they are going to continue supporting the game when possible. The game will continue to operate. They even note that Back 4 Blood is currently available for no extra charge to those with PlayStation Plus Extra, PlayStation Plus Premium, and Xbox Game Pass.

While we never had a review for Back 4 Blood, I can safely say that the game was quite a bit of fun in co-op with friends. It filled that Left 4 Dead gap in our hearts quite nicely. The biggest thing that could have elevated Back 4 Blood above similar titles is if Turtle Rock added in Steam Workshop support, which could have given us access to new community maps, campaigns, and other modifications. Sadly, this never happened and it looks like it never will.

Turtle Rock says that they will be going quiet for a bit while they work on the new project. Their full statement can be read in its entirety below.

Greetings, Cleaners!

What an amazing year 2022 was for us. First off, we wanted to thank all of you for making Back 4 Blood what it is today. With three expansions – Tunnels of Terror, Children of the Worm, and River of Blood – we’ve traveled on a fantastic adventure together beyond the walls of Fort Hope. This phase of our war against the Ridden now comes to a close.

Turtle Rock Studios is actually pretty small for a studio making AAA games. We don’t have quite enough folks to continue working on Back 4 Blood content while we spin up another game – yes, another game! Given this, it’s time for us to put our heads down, get back in the lab, and get to work on the next big thing.

Intrepid Cleaners, this is not a goodbye.

Back 4 Blood will continue to operate, of course. In fact, Back 4 Blood is currently offered on PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers and available as part of Xbox Game Pass. You’ll also still find us hanging out in the SUBREDDIT and on DISCORD, as well as our official TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK and WEBSITE because we love interacting with you and talking about our games.

While we may be a bit quieter in the short-term, we promise that we’ll be Back, bigger, bolder and better than ever!

With much love and gratitude,
Turtle Rock Studios
