  • Amnesia: The Bunker Announced

The creators of Amnesia and SOMA are ready to scare you once again.

A new Amnesia game has just been announced. For some, this is cause for joy. For others, the anxiety has already started to kick in. Frictional Games, the studio that created the Amnesia series and the spectacular SOMA, announce that they are working on Amnesia: The Bunker.

In 2023, Frictional will bring a new Amnesia experience to Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation4, and PlayStation 5.

Unlike the previous Amnesia titles, this one leans more heavily into player agency. For the first time, players will have more freedom to impact the gameplay as they choose how they wish to explore the semi-open world. The game will incorporate emergent gameplay and sandbox elements. Players will be armed with a revolver and a "noisy dynamo flashlight" as they explore an "ill-lighted WWI bunker." You will play as a French soldier that is "troubled by his amnesia and hunted by an otherworldly creature."

Interestingly, it seems as though Frictional is leaning more heavily into the idea of randomization and adaptation. They're saying that everything from objects, resources, and enemy placement will be different in every playthrough.

More information will be shared in the weeks ahead, but for now, there are several new pieces of media that you can check out for Amnesia: The Bunker.

Frictional Games plays it safe. Perhaps a little too safe.

Frictional Games is known for crafting some of the most memorable horror game experiences over the past 15 years. They began with the Prenumbra series, a trio of titles that gave us our first taste of Frictional's penchant for blending survival horror with physics-based environmental puzzles. The studio then saw a spike in popularity with their next release, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Amnesia: The Dark Descent expanded upon the...

”Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.” – Dr. Seuss

SOMA takes everything you think you know about what “humanity” means and throws it into a blender. What is humanity? Are you human because you have the physical attributes we commonly associate with being a homo sapien? Are you a human because of higher-level thoughts and consciousness? If you remove one piece out of the complex grab bag of what we see humanity as,...
