In case you wanted your hopes crushed, here comes Square Enix.

Last month, Square Enix trademarked something called Symbiogenesis in Japan. Naturally, this led to a lot of speculation about what this could be. The strongest hope was that this was for some sort of a Parasite Eve revival, be it a new sequel or perhaps a remake, maybe even a reboot.

Sadly, Symbiogenesis is none of those things. Instead, Symbiogenesis is the name of a new NFT collectible art project from Square Enix.

This NFT collectible art project is slated to kick off in Spring 2023 alongside some new browser service. Square Enix says that Symbiogenesis is "brand-new entertainment content set in a self-contained world where a wide cast of characters symbiosis, all of which can be collected as digital art; an interactive story and a dedicated community."

This is some real "I enjoy my own fragrance" energy there.

Square Enix continues on to say that these "art" pieces can be "used for social media profile pictures and as a character in a story that takes place in an alternate world where the player can 'untangle' a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolization and distribution of resources. With each strategic move players make, more of the story unfolds."

I bet those strategic moves involve spending outrageous prices on JPGs and the "dedicated community" will be made up of losers that still hold on to the hope that their monkeys still hold some measure of value when everybody else has already moved on.
