The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition was released today. This updated version of the game includes over 500 extras for those that want to spend the money to buy this new release at $49.99 (USD) (or the $20 upgrade on Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation). We knew about a lot of the new content already thanks to updates from Bethesda, but there is one thing that came as a surprise today.

Included, for free, is some horse armor. This armor can be obtained through the Creation Club within Skyrim. This isn't just any old horse armor though. This is a replica of the horse armor DLC that was released for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion back in 2006. At release, that cosmetic horse armor cost $2.50 (USD) and quickly became the source of ire and memes within the gaming community.

That $2.50 Oblivion horse armor is also a big reason why we have had over a decade and a half of microtransactions, cosmetic or otherwise, included in most every single game under the sun.

Bethesda decided to be a little cheeky with today's Skyrim Anniversary Edition release and include similar looking horse armor for free to everyone that owns the game. As mentioned, it can be yours through the Creation Club. The armor will show up under the "Featured" tab within the Creation Club menu. Just click on the armor and then click on download. There are two versions: Elven and Steel. You will need to restart the game after downloading. The armor will then appear at the horse sellers that are often located outside of stables. It will cost you just 500 septims to purchase and equip on your horse.

As a little reminder, here are some of the highlights from today's release of the Anniversary Edition that aren't the horse armor meme.

Current and future owners of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on any platform including Xbox Game Pass Subscribers will receive access to four free pieces of Creation Club content: Fishing, Rare Curious, Survival Mode, and even new quests with Saints and Seducers.

Saints & Seducers
Originally released in 2019, this Creation introduces an additional storyline across two quests (complete with side quests) for players to delve into. With additional armor sets, weapons, enemies and much more to discover, Saints & Seducers features some of the largest amounts of content we’ve ever packed into a single creation.

Rare Curios
Included as part of Saints & Seducers, the Rare Curios Creation brings additional goods imported from all over Tamriel to Skyrim’s Khajiit Caravans. So long as you have coin, these merchants can supply you with all sorts of useful wares, including ingredients to concoct special potions, arrows, and poisons.

Survival Mode
Previously released in 2017, the Survival Mode Creation has your Dragonborn contend with the very elements of Skyrim itself to survive! Players must wear warm gear and seek shelter in cold climates to keep from freezing to death, as well as mind their hunger and exhaustion on top of the usual threats like pesky bandits and ambushing dragons. Survival Mode offers a fresh challenge and a new way to experience Skyrim for returning and new players alike.

Fishing
Skyrim’s all-new Fishing mode Creation lets you angle over 20 unique aquatic species across the area’s many bodies of water. Cook your catch for a meal, display it as trophy in your den or even keep it inside your own home aquarium. With many of Skyrim’s fishing spots located in the region’s most breathtaking and tranquil spots.

Anniversary Edition
Skyrim Anniversary Edition features the complete Skyrim Special Edition PLUS all previously released Creation Club creations for the game – including the four free creations.

Players will also be able to enjoy an all-new batch of creations, including new ways to play and new quests tapping into Tamriel’s history. In ‘Ghosts of the Tribunal’ you’ll earn over a dozen new weapons and armors previously featured in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, while ‘The Cause,’ has players encounter the Mythic Dawn, who aim to form a new Oblivion gate, and features brand new enemies, locations, and weapons – not to mention a conjurable Daedric horse! This is just some of the amazing new content releasing in November to mark the 10-year anniversary.
