The Game Awards 2021 will include "double digit" new game announcements. This is according to creator and host of the show, Geoff Keighley, in an interview with industry veteran Brian Crecente. This interview was made for and shared to the Epic Games Store for some unknown reason. Maybe this is just an indication that all of the new PC game announcements are going to be Epic Games Store exclusive. Wouldn't that be just swell?
Keighley says that he expects the show to showcase between 40 to 50 games this year in "some way or another." This includes games that are expected to be released in 2022 and 2023. Keighley also says that this year's show will be split fairly evenly between awards and world premiere game announcements.
I'd like to believe that this is the case, but over the years a number of the actual winner announcements have been pushed to very brief mentions as bookends to the show's commercial breaks.
Keighley also says that this year's show "will definitely see more trailers for things that aren't video games, but are rather video games adjacent, like a television show or movie inspired by or recreating a game." Maybe that includes the first trailer for The Last of Us HBO series.
The Game Awards 2021 will once again feature a live orchestra performance. There will also be celebrity guest appearances. Yay. Woo. Everybody loves those.
Though this year's event will feature a live audience, attendance will be limited to half of its usual size. Those in attendance will need to be vaccinated and everyone is required to wear masks.
The Game Awards 2021 will air on December 9, 2021 at 8PM (ET) from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
December seems to be a more desirable time to announce future stuff, and Geoff needs sponsorships to afford such an expensive show. And instead of crowdfunding to overhaul the show, it just straight up dethrones E3 and becomes the new ruler of gaming marketing, while blissfully ignoring the hard work of developers. Ironic since this is classified as an "awards show," which continually makes me laugh.
Developers slaved and crunched for years just to gamble being laid off, and all they got to show for it is a heavy piece of metal, and a quick passing mention, sometimes before the show even starts.
BUT GIVE ALL THE ATTENTION AND TIME TO CELEBRITIES WHO MISREAD GAME TITLES AND ATTEMPT TO FIT IN WITH THE PEOPLE THEY NEVER HANG OUT WITH!!!!! YOU ARE WITH YOUR PEOPLE NOW!!! HOW WE DOING NERRRRRRRDS?!?!?! YOU LIKE THAT? US NERDS ARE BEING ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE COOL PEOPLE!!! HOLY $#!+ I LOVED TF&TF CROSSROADS!!!!!
I don't want celebrities or even influencers who can sound less awkward and more knowledgeable. I just want nervous developers do the talking, especially developers who earned the industry impact award. I'll take a shorter smaller budget show, to have developers get featured and... Wait for the shocker... Be rewarded for the crunch and other human rights violations they suffered through to produce such a successful product.
Buuuuuut this clearly isn't happening. So I guess I'll watch the VOD clips for my "E3 fix" because watching it live is meaningless since the awards were never the focus. Just rename the damn show and don't be classified as an awards show Geoff. Just admit sponsorships is a necessary evil because crowdfunding can't possibly pay for such a large scale event.
And I know part of the show is out of his own pocket, which is an even bigger shame, as that means he's funding a marketing platform for others to exploit on. Funny. Yeah I'll pass. I'll just keep an eye here for your updates. Maybe your Twitter snark too.
