Sega and the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio announced today that the newest Yakuza game, formerly known simply as Yakuza 7, is coming out in the West in 2020. This confirmation was made alongside the reveal of new gameplay elements, a logo reveal, and an English subtitled story trailer.
Most importantly, the game's full title was also revealed. Yakuza 7 shall hereby be known as Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon introduces a new main protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga. He is a low-level yakuza that is looking to improve his own self-worth. He will be joined by a bunch of unlikely allies as they try to make it big.
Sega and the Yakuza team are calling this release a complete reimagining of the franchise. Gone are the streets of Komorocho. Instead, this game takes place in "the large-scale, painstakingly-realized setting of Ijincho in Yokohama." Not only are the setting and characters different, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon makes use of turn-based combat instead of the free-form real time combat from the previous titles. There is also a much larger emphasis on RPG mechanics in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be out in Japan on January 16, 2020. Look for its western release to happen later on in 2020. Below, you will find the announcement trailer with some story, a gameplay trailer (Japanese only), and some new screenshots.
