  • GameStop Beats Hot Topic to Purchase ThinkGeek

GameStop now owns ThinkGeek. GameStop had to outbid Hot Topic in order to buy ThinkGeek. There is nothing in this news that won't make you go "what the f---" at least once.

The parent company of ThinkGeek, the site that sells oddball "geeky" merchandise, was purchased by the retail "giant" GameStop to the tune of about $140 million. This includes $37 million in cash and "cash equivalents" as of March 31.
"This acquisition creates value to all stakeholders involved," said CEO Paul Raines.

"The addition of Geeknet is an important expansion of our global multichannel platform and we are excited to leverage their product development expertise to broaden our product offering in the fast-growing collectibles category and deepen relationships with our existing customer base."

As mentioned, GameStop beat out Hot Topic. Yes, the same Hot Topic where teens, Twilight fans, and aspiring "goths" (usually all three) decide to become edgy rebels against society and conformism by ironically purchasing the same clothing, meme covered apparel, and various glow in the dark doodads. Hot Topic apparently only offered up $122 million for ThinkGeek. How either Hot Topic or GameStop still have that kind of cash to throw around is the real amazing thing here.

    More GameStop Store Closures
    by Shawn Zipay
As GameStop continues to shutter stores, some are offering big savings.

This is a bit of a mixed bag of news to share with you today. The good news is that some GameStop stores are offering upwards of 30% off new consoles, up to 70% off of used games, and up to 50% off of new games. After discount, you can pick up a Switch Lite for as little as $139.99 (USD). It's typically priced closer to $200. That's awesome! Right?

Sadly, these sales are only happening at a number...

GameStop Considers Itself 'Essential Retail' as It Endangers the Lives of Its Employees
    by Shawn Zipay
Imagine being this full of yourself.

GameStop, the physical retailer that sells video games and video game accessories, told all of its stores today that they should remain open. A memo sent to all store managers says that all stores should remain open even if the city or state goes on lockdown to protect against the spread of Covid-19. The retailer told its employees that they, much like grocery stores and pharmacies, are "essential retail" and are thus exempt from abiding...
