At the same conference where they revealed their new mobile partnership, Nintendo also teased their next hardware release. That's right, the rumors (or not really rumors since it wasn't exactly the best kept secret) are true. Nintendo is working on a new hardware release and they have nicknamed it "NX."

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata put a few fears to rest after the big mobile news reveal. He said that the company is still "dedicated (to the) video game system market."
"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems.

"On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before.

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename NX."

He notes that Nintendo will share additional information about their next hardware release in the coming year.

At this point, it's probably impossible to speculate as to just what in the wide world of sports Nintendo plans on showing off. I mean, they have all types of handheld devices now. They have 3D devices with dual-screens. They have motion controls and second screen displays for their consoles with all matters of backwards compatibility. They could literally be showing off anything in the coming year.

Honestly, the most astonishing thing Nintendo could show off for NX would be a "normal" console like the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 that beats them both in specs and price, and comes with a "normal" controller that holds no additional gimmicks.
