Hot on the heels of a leak and a teaser, the full reveal for Metro 2039 came out today from 4A Games and Deep Silver. The first details, release date, and trailer were all shared.
First up, we learned today that Metro 2039 is coming out to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic. The release window is slated for this winter! That's literally just a few months away now, assuming no delays take place.
4A Games says that this is the "darkest story" they have ever told. Playing as "The Stranger," you will venture through "horrors of a never-ending nightmare, never certain of what is real." In Metro 2039, The Stranger will have a voice, and you will hear this man that is "plagued by h is violent waking nightmares." This is certainly a departure from the previous Metro titles where Artyom really only spoke during loading screens as the narrator.
Though the team at 4A games is made up of people from over 25 different nationalities, a majority of them are from Ukraine. This darker story is one born from "the challenging situation" these members are still enduring due to the Russian invasion of their country.
Our studio was born in Ukraine, and remains majority Ukrainian, but our team has come from over 25 different nationalities. Despite this, we all work together with the Ukrainian spirit for our projects. As we have alluded to previously, the challenging situation our team members in Ukraine are still enduring changed the way we want to tell this story. It is undeniably darker than ever before.
The core themes of METRO remain largely unchanged, those themes have become ever-more apparent and important – we do not aim to romanticise the apocalypse, it is not simply a playground in which to tell our story, but we focus on the human heart of a dead and ruthless world. In METRO 2039, this heart has become rotten, apathetic and darker than ever before. A new faction has risen – The Novoreich, to swallow the Metro as we know it under one leader – the Fuhrer Hunter. But they have made a misstep in crossing The Stranger.
Our games are based on and inspired by the novels of the author Dmitry Glukhovsky – an outspoken critic of the invasion of Ukraine.
His courageous stance has come with a personal price, a life in exile from his home country, Russia, where dissent is a crime.
We’ve crafted this new story together, united by our shared values of freedom and truth that have been shaped by the harsh reality of the world around us.

The Cost of Silence. The Horror of Tyranny. The Price of Freedom.
We want players to walk away with a deeper understanding of what that means.
We want you to you feel it… and question it.

THE YEAR IS 2039.
For a quarter century, the last survivors of nuclear war have been locked in bitter conflict deep in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now, the underground factions are unified under one banner - the Novoreich, led by a new Fuhrer: the legendary Spartan, Hunter. The Fuhrer promises salvation and a new life for the people on the surface but in reality, communities remain trapped deep within the Metro, flooded by propaganda and misinformation, suffering under his authoritarian regime.
You play as The Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares, forced to undertake a harrowing journey back down to the Metro, a place he swore he would never return to. The Stranger will be a fully voiced lead protagonist, making a notable step towards deeper immersion in METRO’s iconic atmospheric storytelling.
