Maker of memory chips, Micron Technology, said on Wednesday that they are exiting the consumer business entirely. Reuters reports that Micron will instead focus entirely on creating advanced memory chips that will be used in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
This announcement comes just a month after pricing forecasts on memory painted a dire picture up through mid-2026.
As a result of Micron's total abandonment of the consumer market, the sale of "Crucial" branded consumer products will cease. Product shipments will continue through February 2026, but once that supply is exhausted there will not be any more coming.
Micron's chief business officer Sumit Sadana says that "AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage."
Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments.
Should other memory chip manufactures such as S.K. Hynix and Samsung follow suit, this will not bode well for the prices on consumer products.
