Konami released Silent Hill f today, assuming you ignore the two days of advanced access the Deluxe edition owners had this week. Today's official release of Silent Hill f is for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games, and the Microsoft Store.
Silent Hill f is a new psychological horror game, but not one set in the iconic location of Silent Hill. This one is set in 1960s Japan and invites players to "immerse themselves to find the beauty in terror."
The game is written by Ryukishi07, whom is best known for writing several novels and manga based on Japanese horror. Japanese horror is an entire segment of horror that focus on psychological horror elements, the supernatural, and Japanese folklore.
Ryukishi07’s narrative vision, partnered with creature and character designs by kera, forces players to embark on a hauntingly beautiful yet harrowing journey. Composed by the legendary Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage, the soundtrack and audio design complement the gaming experience with an immense and tense impact.
Players take on the role of Shimizu Hinako, a high school student struggling under society’s pressure of expectations. Wandering through her hometown Ebisugaoka, a mysterious fog rolls in and covers the town, revealing a disturbing transformation. Hinako must face horrific creatures, uncover mysteries and confront traumatic decisions that will influence her fate.

Another issue is the fact that all cutscenes run at just 30FPS. This can be especially distracting during some sequences where the game quickly transitions rapidly back and forth between gameplay and brief cutscene. This was especially jarring when, near the beginning of the game, a chase sequence featured several such transitions which made the entire sequence feel choppy and annoying to watch. Thankfully, there is at least one mod available, via Lyall, for PC players that can uncap the 30FPS limit for cutscenes.
