Already a massive success on PlayStation 5 and PC, Helldivers 2 will deploy on Xbox Series X|S on August 26th. This will be the first Sony published title to appear on the Xbox platform. If you believed that honor belonged to MLB The Show, you would be mistaken. MLB The Show, while developed by Sony studios, was actually published by MLB Advanced Media on non-PlayStation platforms.
Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead, just released a new trailer for the upcoming Xbox release. It's a very action packed trailer, as most Helldivers trailers tend to be, up until the end of the video. A scene fades in of a cityscape. It's dark. Rain is falling. At the 1:17 mark, a familiar tune begins to play as a lone orbital drop pod descends from the sky.
If that song and scene isn't familiar to you, you either forgot or just never had a chance to play Halo 3: ODST. It was a 2009 release on the Xbox 360 where you play as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, or ODST for short. That game took place during and after the events of Halo 2, mostly throughout the city of New Mombasa in Africa.
The song that kicks in at the 1:17 mark in the Helldivers 2 trailer is the same part that begins at roughly the 0:08 mark in the Rain track from Halo 3: ODST.
It's unclear just what this super obvious crossover will bring to Helldivers 2. Will we see any of the iconic Halo weapons such as the Battle Rifle, Assault Rifle, or even the Pistol? Will it just be some ODST themed cosmetics? Or will we get a full blown recreation of New Mombasa complete with Covenant aliens to fight? I doubt we'll get that last one, but it would be pretty damn cool.
Helldivers 2 hits Xbox on August 26. Crossplay between all platforms (PlayStation, PC, and Xbox) is already confirmed.
