If you can believe it, people aren't happy about that.

Nintendo, not to be outdone by Sony's and Microsoft's "next-gen tax," upset scores of would-be Switch 2 owners yesterday when they revealed that many titles will retail for $79.99. The first title that fans saw the $80 price tag on was for the Switch 2 exclusive Mario Kart World, an open-world racing game that seems to blend gameplay elements from Forza Horizon with traditional Mario Kart games.

Naturally, Mario Kart World won't be the only Switch 2 title priced at $80. Super Mario Party Jamboree: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition are all also $80, as seen at retail giant Walmart.

And yes, those are the actual names being used for the Switch 2 versions of these titles.

Other Switch 2 titles aren't quite as bad as $80 but are instead retailing for $70, same as most next-gen game releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The titles priced at $70 for the Switch 2 include the new 3D Donkey Kong adventure, Donkey Kong Bananza. The Switch 2 release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set to retail for $70. Breath of the Wild first came out in March 2017 for the Wii U and Switch 1.

For a few of these expensive titles, there will be some bonus content included that Nintendo is using to try to justify the prices.

Super Mario Party Jamboree on the Switch 2 includes the new Jamboree TV content. This will offer new minigames tied to the mouse control capabilities on the Joy-Con 2 controllers, the Switch 2 microphone, and the Switch 2 camera (sold separately for $50). The game will also get a resolution bump to 1440p in docked mode, plus a better framerate.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land on Switch 2 will get new story content.

Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will add support for the "Zelda Notes" service in the Switch app. This is a service that will provide you with help for those two titles.

Fans don't seem to be happy about the price of the games, console, nor the price of the Switch 2 accessories. The situation is made worse by the fact that some Switch 2 "physical" releases will be download only, with retail boxes only containing a "Game-Key Card" that will force you to download the entire game digitally anyway.

According to IGN, the post-reveal Nintendo Direct Treehouse livestreams are full of people yelling to "DROP THE PRICE." Beyond the $70 and $80 Switch 2 games, the console on its own is $450. If you buy a Switch 2 bundled with Mario Kart World, the price goes to $500. At least then you're "saving" about $30 off the price of Mario Kart compared to if you purchased it separately. Earlier this year, a number of analysts predicted that Nintendo would debut the Switch 2 at $400. Of course, a lot of those predictions probably came before King Trump and Elon Wormtongue completely fucked the economy.

If you plan to wait for sales before picking up the Switch 2 or any of its new games, you may have to look at third-party retailers. Nintendo has rarely offered decent discounts on their first-party titles during the life of the Switch. Even the Switch hardware hasn't seen a price drop. The Switch debuted in March 2017 for $300, the same price it is right now.
