  • 2K Launcher Fully Removed from Games on Steam and Epic

A failed experiment is laid to rest.

2K has officially removed their 2K Launcher from all titles on Steam and the Epic Games Store. This includes the removal of the "2K Launcher Beta" that was used for Sid Meier's Civilization V.

The removal of the launcher was announced via 2K's support site back on October 28, 2024. The removal process began on November 18 when the 2K launcher was "removed from every game that used it on Epic and Steam." The final update came on November 25 when 2K made extra sure that the 2K Launcher was fully removed.

Where the 2K Launcher was located is now a text file called "2kLauncherRemoved.txt." 2K kindly notes that you can safely delete that file if you want. There may be some additional leftovers here and there depending on the game though.

For example, Mafia: Definitive Edition on Steam made the optional "Disable Launcher" option even more optional. Get ready to see the word "option" a lot of times.

For the Mafia: Definitive Edition Trilogy on Steam, the default option to play will directly launch the game, but there is a secondary option to open the game’s original launcher. These launchers were already optional in the past, as there is a "Disable Launcher" option that will prevent the launcher from appearing, but now they’re even MORE optional!

On that note, if the Disable Launcher option is enabled, the Mafia launchers will not open even if you select the launch option to open them; when the Disable Launcher option is enabled, both launch options will result in the game directly opening. In order for the Mafia launchers to open, the Disable Launcher option must be set to Off. This option can be found in the Game options menu for each game.
Several other titles such as Civilization VI and XCOM 2 have other important notes on what changed when launching the game now that the 2K Launcher is gone. Sometimes additional steps are needed on Steam and sometimes additional steps are needed on Epic, depending on where you play. In the case of XCOM 2, there are now special launch options depending on if you want to play the base game, War of the Chosen, or a mod.
