  • Alan Wake 2 PlayStation 5 Pro Enhancements Detailed

Plenty of raytracing await your return to Bright Falls.
A woman stands near a mirror showing her reflection as an example of raytracing technology added to Alan Wake 2.

With the PlayStation 5 Pro release lingering just around the bend, several studios are coming out with details on how their titles will be enhanced on the $700 console. Today, Remedy Entertainment detailed what fans can expect from various PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements for Alan Wake 2.

Remedy says that there will still be two graphics modes for Alan Wake 2 on the Pro. They are still labeled as Quality and Performance. Quality Mode will run at 30FPS but include raytraced reflections on both opaque and transparent surfaces. The output resolution will be 4K but the render resolution will be 2176 x 1224. That render resolution will be upscaled to 4K thanks to Sony's "PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution" or PSSR. PSSR is basically Sony's own implementation of AI-powered upscaling that uses machine for the upscaling methods.

On the other side of the coin is the Performance Mode. For the PS5 Pro, Performance Mode will run at 60FPS and will use "approximately the same render settings as the base PS5 Quality Mode." This means that the Pro's Performance Mode for Alan Wake 2 will feature improved image stability, volumetric lighting, and better shadow accuracy similar to what the base PS5 Quality Mode offered above the base PS5 Performance Mode.

Remedy notes that the base PS5 Performance mode runs at a much lower internal resolution while the Pro renders at 1536 x 864 and outputs at a 4K resolution thanks to PSSR. The base PS5 version outputs at only 1440p. The base PS5 Quality Mode also capped out at 30FPS, which wasn't exactly a great experience for the more action-filled sections of the game and is a big reason why I preferred to play most of the game using Performance Mode when possible for my Alan Wake 2 review.

Below, you will be able to see two comparison videos Remedy released to show the improvements made for Alan Wake 2 on the PlayStation 5 Pro. You will also be able to see a few images from Remedy that show off the added raytracing to the Pro version of the game. Those of you on PC with high-end hardware have probably already seen the raytracing at work in the game.

Easily, the best horror game in years.

In 2010 Remedy Entertainment released Alan Wake, a game where a writer is pulled into a horrifying world seemingly of his own creation. Alan Wake was a game that I bounced off at least two times. Despite the game being well received by critics and fans, I felt like its gameplay was just a repetitive slog that even its unique story could not overcome. When a sequel was announced by Remedy, I found myself extremely indifferent to the news. Still...

      Alan Wake teases more platforms.

Remedy Entertainment has regained the publishing rights to the Alan Wake franchise from Microsoft.

The development studio is currently working on Control, but they apparently found a bit of time to acquire the rights to the horror-action romp starring an author. The company told investors that they would earn €2.5 million on royalties for "previously released games" this fiscal year.
