The newest Like a Dragon (Yakuza) game is setting sail on the high seas of piracy. Revealed in September, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will see players taking control of ex-Tojo Clan member Goro Majima after he washes up on the beaches of this tropical paradise with no memories of his past.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is set six months after the events of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the most recent mainline title in the series. However, Pirate Yakuza will not be anywhere near as long as Infinite Wealth. RGG Studio says that this game will be roughly 1.3 to 1.4 times larger than Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, which was a relatively short spin-off title that filled in some gaps of time between Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
During that initial reveal, Pirate Yakuza was announced with a release date of February 28, 2025. Now, RGG Studio says that the game will instead be released a week earlier, on February 21, 2025.
A video message posted by RGG Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama explains that there are two reasons for the date moving up by one week. First, he notes that development on the game is progressing "more smoothly than expected." Secondly, it seems like they did not want to have to compete with the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, which is expected to be released on February 28, 2025.
This is partly because development is progressing more smoothly than expected, but we also want to deliver the game to players around the world as soon as possible. We wanted you to be able to play the game that comes after it with peace of mind.
Included below are a few of the videos already released for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. There are more up on Sega's YouTube channel, but be warned that all of these videos may include spoilers. I'll have the Announce Trailer embedded as the first video below if you want to just watch that one.
