  • Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live Recap: Borderlands 4, Mafia, Indiana Jones, and Peter Molyneux

A rogue NewsBits has been spotted in your area. SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY! DO NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE! DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT! DO NOT LOOK UP!

    Mostly bald guy sitting smugly.

The 2024 edition of Gamescom Opening Night Live concluded about 30 minutes ago as I begin to write this. It might be nearer to an hour old now by the time this actually goes live, of course.

During the annual showcase of trailers, Geoff Keighley and his new boot goofin' took to the stage to share a bunch of WORLD PREMIERE trailers for games that are coming out soon and some that won't be out for a good while.

Just off the top of my head, I know we saw trailers for a new Mafia game, a teaser for Borderlands 4, another look at the Indiana Jones game (which is coming out later this year on Xbox and PC, AND on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2025), Little Nightmares 3, Reanimal (from the original Little Nightmares people), and Peter Molyneux was there to talk about something or other. It's not Curiosity 2: Electric Boxaloo, so who even cares, right?

I've included some of the bigger reveals from Gamescom that have been shared thus far. There are a bunch of smaller titles I did not include either because I got tired of writing or because I simply forgot to include them. After all, I'm but just a normal man. Just an innocent man.

What was I saying? Oh yeah, NewsBits. They're here. Beware.

    Unawake (PC)

The Unreal Engine 5 powered title will bring action-packed, yet tactical skirmish combat thick and fast as players try to survive in an end-time caused by angels and demons. Unawake’s nightmarish world is brought to life by stunning world design visuals set against a narrative of an epic battle against impossible odds, where players decide the fate of humanity and determine the future of an Earth marked by merciless wars between creatures from heaven and hell.

    Directive 8020 (PC, PS5, XSX)

Earth is dying and humanity is running out of time. 12 light years from home, Tau Ceti f offers a small sliver of hope. When the colony ship Cassiopeia crash lands on the planet, its crew soon realize they are far from being alone.

Hunted by an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey, the crew of the Cassiopeia must outwit their pursuers to make it home alive. As they battle to survive, they are confronted with the hardest choice of all: to save themselves, they must risk the lives of everyone on Earth.

In space, death takes many forms.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (PC, PS5, XSX)

The First Look Gameplay trailer offers a look into the gameplay of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, including the navigation between the dual timelines of 1995 and 2022, using Swann’s camcorder to film her summer, and of course, making dialogue choices in the game. We see the dynamic dialogue system, which promises another level of immersion: it can change based on where you look and what you say, and players can choose to ignore and interrupt other characters, which makes conversations feel more real and choices more important than ever.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (PC, PS5, XSX)

Space Marine 2 invites players to embody the titular supersoldiers in all their brutality and glory across single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Take on horrors from beyond the stars as the full weight of Warhammer 40,000’s galactic warfare descends on a single star system. Combat is a grand spectacle combining fluid movement and lightning reflexes with humongous weaponry and overwhelming power.

    Mecha BREAK (PC, XSX)

    Borderlands 4 (PC, PS5, XSX)

Borderlands 4 is the fourth mainline title and seventh overall entry in the franchise. Players will once again assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they search for secret alien treasure while blasting everything in sight.

Monster Hunter Wilds (PC, PS5, XSX)

The latest footage for the highly anticipated action RPG showcased the Scarlet Forest and a spider-like monster known as Lala Barina, who patrols this lush woodland. Capcom also presented the first extended look at a region’s apex monster and explored exciting new gameplay details, including how to clash with larger-than-life foes head-on, hunt as a group even in single player, and enjoy unprecedented freedom in the seamless world of the Forbidden Lands.

    Starfield: Shattered Space (PC, XSX)

The REV-8 land vehicle is out this August. The Shattered Space expansion is out September 30, 2024.

Bethesda Game Studios announced a September 30, 2024 release date for Shattered Space. Explore the new city of Dazra on House Va’Ruun’s hidden homeworld. Investigate a frightening cosmic threat, explore House Va’Ruun’s home planet, and find unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear in this all-new adventure.

No More Room in Hell 2 (PC)

The new gameplay trailer reveals a brand new map area, The Church, which is just one section of the massive Power Plant map set in rural Pennsylvania. Learn how to survive together -- or die alone -- as you complete objectives, utilize stealth and inflict damnation back at the undead with powerful weapons like the baseball bat, shotgun, and deadly fires. The trailer also showcases the Shambler zombie type unleashing its scream, alerting all zombies in proximity, drawing hell upon players.

Enotria: The Last Song (PC, PS5, XSX)

Vibrant Italian folklore-inspired Soulslike Enotria: The Last Song is playable at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne, Germany, with plenty in store ahead of its release next month. Peter Molyneux there? He must have had a day release from the asylum.
