The re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release.

QuakeCon kicked off today and with it came a few new announcements and releases.

First up is a new re-release for both DOOM and DOOM 2 by id Software. These games have been enhanced and combined into a single bundle. This new definitive edition, co-developed with Nightdive Studios, is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The enhancements include:

• Online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players
• Community published single-player mod support with an in-game mod browser
• Optimized renderer
• Accessibility options
• Optional IDKFA soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult selectable alongside the original midi soundtracks – including the never-before-released IDKFA version of DOOM II
• Improved performance with multithreaded rendering supporting up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5
• Brand new episode, “Legacy of Rust,” with new weapons and demons made in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames

Those that own DOOM and/or DOOM 2 on any of those platforms will get a free upgrade to the new release while still being able to access the previously owned versions.

In keeping with the DOOM news, DOOM Eternal now has a public beta for official mod creation tools. The beta can be tested by any potential mod makers out there. It also facilitates access to downloading and playing mods as well. This beta is available for both Steam and the Microsoft Store.

Next is the announcement of a physical release of the DOOM Anthology. This release includes DOOM, DOOM 2, DOOM 64, DOOM 3, DOOM (2016), and DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition. It includes a SteelBook case, and a 5-inch replica of the BFG with LEDs and a stand.

DOOM Anthology will be available for purchase on October 22, 2024 for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.

Finally for DOOM news, Limited Run Games will release DOOM SNES. This is an updated port of the original 16-bit DOOM SNES release. There will be both a Standard Edition and Collector's Edition. The bundle features 14 new levels, circle strafing, and more. It will be available in 2025.
