  • Sales of PlayStation VR2 Headsets Reportedly Up 2,000% After Price Drop

A huge $200 price drop saw sales increase by over 2,300%.

The suggested retail price of the PlayStation VR2 headset sat at a lofty $550 since its debut in February 2023. It was a very expensive piece of technology, especially when you consider that the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive only came to $499. The high price undoubtedly played a huge role in slow sales of the VR headset and Sony's move to let the device be usable on PC.

Things are looking up for PlayStation VR2 though, at least in the short term. Retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon started to sell the PlayStation VR2 headset for a whopping $200 off of its regular price, bringing the price down to just $350. According to "exclusive retailer data" obtained by The Shortcut, this price drop caused sales of the PlayStation VR2 to increase by 2,350% over a 24-hour period. The Shortcut says that "there were more PSVR 2 sales on Sunday than in the first seven months of 2024 combined."

Sadly, Amazon seems to currently be sold out of PlayStation VR2 devices. However, that $200 price reduction is still being offered at retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy, both of which seem to have stock available if you decide to take the plunge.

Even if you don't purchase a PlayStation VR2 for use with a PlayStation 5, you can soon use the device on your PC. PC support for PlayStation VR2 begins on August 7. You will need to purchase a separate $60 adapter if you want to connect the headset to your PC though. You will also need to setup the device through a special app, which will be available through Steam. Sadly, some functionality of the PlayStation VR2 headset will not work on PC. These include features such as HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback.

Despite these features not being available when used with a PC, the $350 for PlayStation VR2 starts to look very tempting when compared to the $500 Meta Quest 3. Just keep in mind that the Quest 3 can be played wirelessly while the PlayStation VR2 will need a wired connection to your PC to function.
