It's got cars and they're going fast. That's all it needs.
Screen grab from the Gran Turismo movie trailer showing someone playing the Gran Turismo game.

The first trailer for the upcoming Gran Turismo film by Neil Blomkamp made its debut earlier today. The film is obviously based off of the racing game franchise of the same name, but there are a few liberties being taken here or there for this film adaptation.

Blomkamp, who is perhaps best known for directing movies like District 9 and Elysium, puts his own spin on that deep Gran Turismo lore for this film. Based on a true story, Gran Turismo follows the life of a racing game obsessed teen who gradually converts his controller skills to real-world racing skills. That teens' dream? To become a professional racecar driver.

Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver.
The film stars Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, David Harbour, Djimon Hounsou, and Orlando Bloom. The movie is based off of the Gran Turismo series of simulation racing games. The first Gran Turismo was released in 1997 for the original PlayStation by Polyphony Digital. The latest game in the franchise, Gran Turismo 7, was released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in March 2022.

Gran Turismo will hit theaters on August 11.
