A re-imagining of the original trilogy is currently in development.
As part of today's THQ Nordic showcase event, the publisher announced a new and re-imagined release of Alone in the Dark. THQ Nordic says that this will be a re-imagination of the original trilogy that "aims to scare you to the bone."
From my understanding, this release will incorporate some characters and locations that are familiar to the fans, but it will be an entirely new story with several new places to explore.
Alone in the Dark is being developed by Pieces Interactive and will be coming to PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Those attending Gamescom this weekend will get to try out a playable demo of the game.

At least they're re-imagining (aka throwing away and making their own story) Alone in the Dark 2 and 3. I didn't understand what Infogrames was thinking when changing survival horror to adventuring with the mafia, pirates, and cowboys... I'm not even sure if some of the enemies are undead/supernatural at all. The first game terrified me and legitimately made me afraid of the dark (I was a kid back then), while the second and third games... Seemed like comedy parodies. Then again, every single game was directed by a different person.
So here's hoping this alternate universe will actually be scary with the mafia, pirates, and cowboys assuming those remain as the themes. Still not a fan of seeing Resident Evil 4 though. I guess they don't care to be the original inspiration anymore?
(Please make Emily Hartwood a good character. Even the original 1 & 3 didn't do her justice.)
As for the game: I've no horse in this race. Never played the originals. I only ever attempted to play 2008's Alone in the Dark that I heard was bad and yeah, it was absolutely terrible, and I don't think I ever returned to it after one gaming session.
The writer behind SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: Justine is the director and writer for this, so I'm cautiously optimistic. SOMA was phenomenal.
