Build an alternate reality.
Minecraft Earth

Microsoft wants to build a world within our own world. That's the basic idea behind the newly announced augmented reality game, Minecraft Earth. This is a newly announced upcoming augmented reality game that should be coming to a mobile phone near you this Summer with the launch of a closed beta program.

Minecraft Earth will be free to play when it releases and may include some sort of microtransactions. The team still isn't sure yet just how or what they would monetize with the game, so it's still very much in the air. However, they do make it clear that Minecraft Earth will not have loot boxes.

So uh, how do you play Minecraft Earth?

The game’s mechanics are simple: explore your neighborhood to find blocks and unique mobs for your builds. Once you have them, any flat surface is an opportunity to build. Team up with friends to create amazing builds on Build Plates, and then place them in the real world to explore at life-size. You can even put your survival skills to the test and battle mobs IRL! Craft new items, breed mobs, grow crops –it’s Minecraft as you know it in a way you’ve never seen before. There’s endless fun to be had and it’s even better with friends.

The game blends state-of-the-art Microsoft technology like Azure Spatial Anchors AR tracking and PlayFab integration to bring the Minecraft Earth experience to life.
You will obviously need a modern-ish iOS of Android device to play Minecraft Earth.

Registration for the Minecraft Earth beta are now open. You can sign up for the beta today and, at the very least, you'll get a free Minecraft Earth skin for signing up. If there is still any confusion in your mind, Mojang and Microsoft set up a brief FAQ that might answer your questions.

Microsoft also revealed today that Minecraft has now become the most sold game in the history of forever. As of today, Minecraft has sold over 176,000,000 copies across all platforms. This has propelled it over the former reigning champ, Tetris, by almost 6 million copies. On top of this, there are now more than 200 million Minecraft users in China. Minecraft was initially released 10 years ago. It was a game that came from space.
