As far as physical retail sales go, Anthem was the best selling game in the UK in its first week of release.

That's the extent of the good news.

The bad news is that it sold roughly half of the total number of units BioWare's previous title sold in its first week. That's right, Mass "My Face is Tired" Effect Andromeda outsold BioWare's latest and, er, let's just leave it at "latest."

Digital sales for these titles are not included in these sales figures. Meaning that the number of units sold on services like Origin for PC, or the stores you know and love on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There might still be some silver lining there yet, right?

Well, probably not. See, as Anthem sold half of what Andromeda did in its first week, so did Andromeda in comparison to Mass Effect 3. That is to say, physical retail sales for Anthem are around a quarter of the sales for Mass Effect 3. In comparison to a game like Destiny 2, Anthem sold only a quarter of what Destiny 2 did in its first week in 2017.

EA had wanted to see Anthem sell 5-6 million units by the end of March 2019. It is unknown as to what may happen should Anthem fail to meet these sales expectations. Right now, BioWare has a 90-day Anthem roadmap that takes us up through May with a series of updates containing new content and features.
