CD Projekt RED released an update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt today that is tailored for the Xbox One X. This update for the fantastic RPG now allows users to play in either a 4K Mode or a Performance Mode.

Let's see what this means according to CD Projekt RED.
In 4K Mode, the game and all its additional content will run in 4K resolution (or supersampled on a non-4K display), featuring enhanced shadows, ambient occlusion and texture filtering, as well as higher resolution textures and gameplay at 30 fps.

Switching to Performance Mode will enable dynamic resolution scaling, rendering the game at a resolution of minimum 1080p and up to 4K, while targeting 60 fps during gameplay.

Note that it says it "targets" 60fps. Meaning that while the game will try very hard to maintain 60fps consistently, it may not be a rock solid 60fps even in performance mode. However, both modes support HDR, for those of you lucky enough to have displays that support it.

Xbox One X owners that are looking to check out these modes should simply go to Options and then Display. Under the Advanced section, you will be able to swap between the 4K Mode and the Performance Mode.
List of changes for Xbox One X:
• 2 new graphic modes: 4K Mode and Performance Mode
• support for 4K resolution
• HDR support
• enhanced shadows, ambient occlusion and texture filtering
• higher resolutions textures
• dynamic resolution scaling (from 1080p to 4K)

If this news sounds familiar, that may be because the PlayStation 4 received a similar patch back in October. The PlayStation 4 Pro patch included a 4K resolution upgrade and improvements to ambient occlusion, texture filtering, and even some gains to performance. However, there is an additional patch coming "in the near future" for the PS4 Pro that will provide additional improvements and the implementation of HDR. I'm sure we'll have more information on that patch as it's released.
