New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, just signed into law a bill that will make the penalty for swatting a felony throughout the state. Swatting, the act of making false emergency calls with the purpose of endangering lives, will now carry a punishment of up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $150,000.

Democratic Assemblyman, Paul Moriarty, added his own thoughts about the new bill.
"It is time to send a message that this is not going to be treated lightly.

"We are talking about elaborate hoaxes that have drawn teams of specially trained officers, sometimes resulting in the closure of whole city blocks or roads, and occasionally even causing serious harm… to the unsuspecting and innocent people who have these teams show up at their door."

Moriarty was a victim of a swatting incident in 2015. The previous laws against the act of swatting carried a sentence of three to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
