  • Steam Replay Offers a Look Back at all the Questionable Gaming Choices You Made in 2022

Now everybody knows how many hours you spent playing Cookie Clicker.

Valve just dropped a nice little surprise on every Steam user today. As the Steam Winter Sale continues on in full force, Valve released the Steam Replay. This neat little feature shows Steam users a look back on their year of gaming for 2022.

Steam Replay is a personalized look back at how you spent your time playing Steam games throughout 2022. See your most played games. See how many new Achievements you unlocked. See what games you played using mouse and keyboard versus using a controller. Hell, they even have monthly breakdowns on how much of your time you spent in your most played games throughout the year. Want to know which month was your least productive? Steam Replay will tell you!

Infographic showing the most played games for Zips on Steam. Text says 159 games played (top 0.3% of players), 807 achievements, 1190 sessions, 112 new games. The top most played games are Destiny 2 at 13%, Elden Ring at 8%, Battlefield 2042 at 7%, Dying Light 2 Stay Human at 4%, and Days Gone at 4%.

For instance, 13% of my total gaming time in 2022 was spent playing Destiny 2, with second place being Elden Ring at 8%, and Battlefield 2042 having a strong showing at 7% despite not playing it at all from February through May. While I may not have a Steam Deck, those that do have a Steam Deck will get some bonus stat breakdown showing the most played Steam Deck titles.

Valve put together a short blog post talking about the Steam Replay, should you want to read through that. Valve also released an official Steam Replay video. Before we get to that, they also want to remind everyone that the Steam Winter Sale continues on until January 5 at 10AM (PT).

My CSGO sessions had a weird glitch where they didn't show during March or April.

And for some reason, some ARPG called "Elden Ring" appears to have been played for some 400 hours.

I completely forgot I played through the entirety of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero... AND the Deleted Scenes... I blocked it out of my memory and Steam Replay reminded me. God that was a chore to play. Turtle Rock Studios thought it was fun to ask me to kill with an HE grenade, or kill with a knife while everyone else uses rifles - yes I can use guns, but I need to carefully injure and then finish them off before I die, or my teammate steals my kill going Rambo. And Ritual Entertainment thought their parody of Die Hard with an AI team that is scripted to charge into machine gun fire would be an explosive thrill ride. Damn, Condition Zero was horrible, but Turtle Rock Studio's AI for multiplayer is quite impressive all things considered, and is compatible with CS 1.6.

Also I noticed my graph is adamant that I only love horror games and platformers, because I played too much Phasmophobia and Portal 2. I prefer rhythm, racing, and first-person shooters, but because of those two games, I'm apparently a horror and platformer fan. Aw damn it!

And I thought I played Horizon Chase Turbo this year. That was last year? And when the heck did I play Slipstream again this year?!

At least I beat the average for obtaining Achievements so I can convince myself I'm wasting my life appropriately.

Also, the promo video was fun to watch. I'm glad Kaci Aitchison (who was a journalist by the way) became Doug Lombardi's successor, given how she's into doing comedic skits to promote stuff in VALVe.

And she has great comedic chemistry with Jay Shaw, who seems to dress up for whatever the theme of the video is. He's also the disembodied voice for any of the Steam Deck videos (including the dismantling one). So of course this video would have the two of them doing more shenanigans.

Doesn't top the DOTA 2 Cave Johnson announcer pack video though.

Major Steam Client Update Leaves Beta
    by Shawn Zipay
Over a month of beta testing later, the update is ready for prime time.

In late April, Valve pushed out a beta update for the Steam client. This update was far more extensive than mere bug fixes or tiny tweaks here and there. This update has just left beta and is out for everyone using Steam.

First and foremost, Steam is now using a new and updated framework. A lot of this won't be visible to the end user, but it allows Valve to more easily share code between the desktop...
