  • Portal with RTX Releases December 8, System Requirements Revealed

Nvidia offers up another look at Portal with ray tracing ahead of its release.

December 8 is the release date set for Portal with RTX, a free DLC update to those that own the original Portal that will add full ray tracing capabilities and enhanced visuals. This release will also add DLSS 3 support to the game, though it is unclear if DLSS will be usable in the non-ray traced version of the game.

Though free to everyone that owns Portal, Portal with RTX will only be realistically accessible by a relatively small number of owners. At an absolute minimum, Nvidia is saying that you will need a GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. One of these cards will let you play Portal with RTX at 1080p and a whole 30 frames per second and that's with DLSS 2 enabled.

For those looking to play this at 4K resolution and 60FPS, you will need an RTX 4080 card, 32GB of RAM, and either an Intel i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 9 5900. The full breakdown of minimum, recommended, and ultra specs can be seen in the image below.

Nvidia also put together a new comparison video for Portal with RTX. In the video, Nvidia compares how the game runs with the fancy new ray tracing features enabled and shows a comparison of performance with DLSS off and DLSS 3 enabled. This video is, to put it mildly, a wee bit useless as a comparison.

While it's obvious that the side running DLSS 3 would perform better, it would have also been nice to see that compared to how DLSS 2 would perform. After all, most people with RTX capable cards probably don't own the 40-series yet, especially not when even the "lower" end RTX 3080 starts at $1,200 (USD).

Nvidia will be celebrating the launch of Portal with RTX with a little giveaway. They will be giving away some Portal game codes during a live stream through Twitch and Steam. They will also offer viewers a chance to win an RTX 4090 GPU. This launch party will take place on December 6 at 10AM (PT). Details about this party and giveaway can be found at the bottom of this Nvidia article.
