XBOX: 1,600 Layoffs Today, Another 1,600 Over the Next Year, Four Studios Now Independent or Sold, Arkane in Limbo

More broadly, Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs.

Today, Microsoft is laying off 2.1% of its workforce. This equates to 4,800 people that are being let go. The company's XBOX division is cutting about 20% of its entire workforce. All of this is being done in an effort to cut costs due to rising prices and expenses brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).

As a quick reminder: Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on AI in 2026. In 2025, the company spent $80 billion...

PlayStation is Killing Physical Game Discs

Digital only after January 2028.

Starting January 2028, Sony will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation game releases. All games released in January 2028 and after will be available only through digital stores such as the PlayStation Store.

Sony attempts to justify this move by claiming it's a "natural direction" in order to "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."...

All good things...

Bungie is calling it quits on Destiny 2. The Sony owned Marathon developer announced the final live-service content update for Destiny 2. Today's announcement was a long time coming and one that most fans saw the writing on the wall for months ago.

That final content update for Destiny 2, Monument of Triumph, takes place on June 9, 2026. Bungie says that they will begin a "new journey as a studio" on that date with includes working on their...

Lord of Hatred Review: Diablo 4 Finally Finds Its Final Form

This is Diablo 4 at its best. I mean it this time. For real.

Returning to the world of Sanctuary for this latest chapter feels like a true homecoming for those of us who have spent hundreds of hours traversing its dark and unforgiving landscapes since the base game launched back in 2023. The release of the Lord of Hatred expansion marks a significant step forward in the narrative that was originally set in motion during the initial campaign and furthered by the events of the Vesse...

  • Battlefield V 2019 Roadmap Reveals New Map Releases and New Theater of War

Battlefield V 2019 Roadmap Reveals New Map Releases and New Theater of War

DICE has finally provided the roadmap for Battlefield V through Fall 2019. Included in this roadmap are mentions of new maps, which look to begin in May, and a new theater of war. Given the name of the new theater, Awakening the Giant, slated for Fall 2019, is the upcoming theater of war.

Given the title of that new theater, I think it's safe to say that they're referencing the United States. This is based off of the famous quote from Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in reference to...

Battlefield 5 'Firestorm' Battle Royale Reveal Trailer and First Details

The upcoming battle royale mode for Battlefield 5 was finally revealed today thanks to an all-new trailer. The trailer doesn't show actual gameplay, but it does offer an "in-engine" look at some of the antics you and your crew will get up to.

I suppose I should preface this by saying Firestorm is the name of this new mode. It's slated to be added to Battlefield 5, free of charge to everyone that owns the game, on March 25.

    Firestorm finds 64 players battling...

DICE Buffs Shotguns in March 5 Update for Battlefield 5

DICE has already provided the patch notes for the Battlefield V update that is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, March 5. This is "Update #4" for Battlefield V Tides of War Chapter 2: Lightning Strikes. Yeah, their naming conventions on these updates are a bit annoying, I agree.

Of the changes included in this update, we're going to see an overall buff to the shotguns in the game. DICE somehow came to the conclusion that they were now weaker than SMGs? I, uh, hm......

  • Battlefield 5 Adds Combined Arms Co-op, Balancing, and More in Tomorrow's Update

A patch that is tentatively slated to be released tomorrow, February 12, will add in some new content and features for Battlefield 5 players. Some of these new features include a four-player co-op game mode called Combined Arms. The update will also add in DLSS support and better RTX support for those using supported cards.

DLSS is a new technology that, in simple terms, makes the game look better and perform better through machine learning. It's mainly useful for resolutions...

  • EA Apparently Blames Weak Battlefield V Sales on Prioritizing Campaign Over Battle Royale

Just when you thought the general rabble about Battlefield V was finally quieting down, EA released their Q3 2019 financials to investors today. In doing so, EA's top brass say that Battlefield V sold roughly 1 million units below expectations because development prioritized a single player campaign over getting a battle royale mode ready for launch.

To its credit, Battlefield V still sold 7.3 million units across all platforms, but it's still considered underperforming according...

  • Battlefield V's Latest Update Improves Panzerstorm Map, Reduces Footstep Sounds, and More

The second part of the "Lightning Strikes" update for Battlefield V has finally arrived. With it comes a bunch of much needed improvements to the Panzerstorm map alongside some new gear, gameplay tweaks, and more.

The first half of this Lightning Strikes update went live earlier this month. In that update, DICE upped the volume of footsteps to a very, very audible degree. Some may say that they increased it a bit too much. I am one such person. In fact, it seems as though...

Battlefield V is Now the First Game to Support Ray Tracing

With today's update to the game, Battlefield V is now the first game out there to support DirectX's real-time ray tracing (DXR). If you own an Nvidia 20xx card, you may want to check it out for yourself. Or maybe don't, because the performance hit is, to put it mildly, massive.
So, what is ray tracing? Essentially, an algorithm traces the path of light from many different viewpoints and simulates the way it interacts with 3D objects in the scene. As the ray moves through the scene it

Battlefield V Battle Royale Mode Won't Be Out Until March 2019

According to the just released Battlefield V roadmap, the battle royale mode for the game won't be released until at least March 2019. Talk about just handing the "W" to Treyarch and Activision with their Blackout mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. By the time March rolls around, Blackout will have had a solid five months to be refined and handle customer feedback.

  • Battlefield 1 Premium Pass Will Be Free for One Week Following Battlefield V Open Beta

We already know that Battlefield V will not have any Premium Pass to bump up the cost of the game. All future content for the game, save for probably cosmetics, will be free so long as you at least own the base game. That's pretty neat.

However, a game that still does have a Premium Pass is Battlefield 1. If you own the game, then you may want to stay tuned for next week when DICE and EA will make the Battlefield 1 Premium Pass available for free to everyone for a limited time. I...

According to the multiplayer portion of the Battlefield V website, the co-op focused "Combined Arms" mode for the game will be released after the game's launch.

This mode joins the battle royale mode as being yet another piece of content that won't be ready for Battlefield V's launch on October 19. Hell, for a long time there, it was also rumored that the much discussed Grand Operations mode would also miss the October launch as well, but DICE was quick to squash that piece of...

  • How Many Games Did You Complete in 2025?
    by Shawn Zipay
Make up your own definition of "complete."

Was 2025 a big year for game completions for you, or were you more of a "stick to one never-ending, live-service game for the entire year" sort of player?

For this, you can take whatever definition you want as a game "completion." Beat the main story? Earned 100% of the game's achievements? Or simply played enough that you're satisfied with what you accomplished and have no plans to return any time...
