Entertainment Weekly released a very lengthy write-up about basically all things XBOX today. The feature talks about the recent XBOX Games Showcase, the new leadership at XBOX, and then dives straight into how XBOX is continuing to expand into Hollywood adaptations of some of their biggest franchises.

First up is an update on the live-action Gears of War film that Netflix is working on. This one is still in production from director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Bullet Train) and writer Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Dune: Part One, Dune: Part 2). New from Entertainment Weekly is word that the film will focus on "the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity."

XBOX's Matt Booty offered up some additional thoughts on the film adaptation of Gears of War.

"The game really is about the bonds between teams. It's about brotherhood at its core," Booty says. "When you go visit the studio, their tagline is 'Never Fight Alone.' So when you think about that for a dramatic narrative, it's a pretty good starting point."
Entertainment Weekly also broke the news that there is a live-action Sea of Thieves film being worked on. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day) will, along with his production company Hisako Films, produce the Sea of Thieves film. A director and writer have not yet been selected.

Once again, Matt Booty says some words.

"The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community," Booty explains. "So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not, Who are the main characters? What's the plot? It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like."
It really isn't clear just what the plot could focus on given that there really isn't a core plot to the game. Despite what Booty says, you cannot create an entire film based on tone. Sea of Thieves is mostly a sandbox experience with some notable exceptions like the Pirates of the Caribbean crossover. This Sea of Thieves film also begs the question: Why live-action? Sea of Thieves has such a striking look that you would think some sort of animated production would be better suited for an adaptation of the game.

Other non-gaming XBOX productions include A Minecraft Movie Squared, Netflix animated series for both Gears of War and Minecraft, the third season of Fallout, a live-action Wolfenstein show at Amazon, and a reality show competition based on Fallout Shelter.
