Rockstar Games is doing something nice for fans. Starting on June 18, those that own Grand Theft Auto 5 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the current-gen versions of the game for free. Rockstar specifically says that these upgrades will apply only to the digital version of Xbox One and to "any" copy on PlayStation 4. It probably also stands to reason that you won't be able to hop between console families with this, so only PS4 to PS5 and XB1 to Series X|S upgrades would be allowed.
Rockstar says that this will allow players to "experience the best version of GTAV and GTA Online" ahead of the newly announced heist that is coming to GTA Online. The upgrade process should be straightforward and will allow you to migrate over your Story Mode progress as well as your Online progress. There are also several technical improvements to nearly every aspect of the game when going from the previous generation of consoles to the current generation. The most obvious of these improvements is the push to 60 FPS. A good look at these improvements can be seen in this Digital Foundry video from four years prior when the improvements were first rolled out.
Those on PC will also get all of the technical improvements, plus more, by making use of the free upgrade from the Legacy version of the game to the Enhanced edition. There are some PC-only features included in the Enhanced release, including ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination.
The "new heist" mentioned prior is the upcoming Kortz Center Heist. This new heist will be added to GTA Online in July and will task players with raiding an art gallery's collection for a big payday. Players will apparently need to add the Art Studio to their Mansion property, then "scope out the sprawling Kortz Center complex" before agreeing on an approach. The heist will span multiple stages from infiltrating to escape.
There will also be some ways to prepare for this new heist coming to GTA Online in the coming weeks. These special events will include bonus GTA$ rewards, discounts, and more.
