  • Ubisoft Ceases All Game Development at Red Storm Entertainment, Over 100 Laid Off

Will just be a minor support studio.

Ubisoft has ceased all game development at the North Carolina based Red Storm Entertainment. As a result of this decision, 105 employees have been laid off.

According to information shared with Games Industry from an anonymous Ubisoft source, the studio will technically remain open but the few that remain employed there will be working on the Snowdrop engine, IT support, and customer relations.

The last couple of titles that Red Storm was working on were cancelled. There was an untitled Splinter Cell VR game that was cancelled in 2022. Red Storm was also working on Tom Clancy's The Division Heartland, which was cancelled in 2024.

Prior to those games, Red Storm was known for working on various Rainbow Six titles. They were the original Rainbow Six studio, having developed 1998's Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. They went on to also work on several other early Rainbow Six titles and expansions up through Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Red Storm was the Rainbow Six studio back in the day. Those older titles will forever hold a special place in my heart and are still some of the best tactical games around.

Red Storm also developed several Ghost Recon titles, including the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series. More recently, they developed and released Star Trek: Bridge Crew and Assassin's Creed Nexus VR.

Today's effective shuttering of Red Storm and subsequent layoffs are due to Ubisoft's still ongoing restructuring. Ubisoft issued several rounds of layoffs already during the course of this lengthy restructuring, including in both January and February 2026. Red Storm was hit with layoffs in July 2025 and August 2024.

Red Storm Entertainment was formed in 1996.

This is another huge shame. R6 Raven Shield got me into the franchise, having played the demo in late 2002 at the UK insomnia LAN i-14. Ended up even winning a Clanbase cup.
