More layoffs have hit Ubisoft today with word that 40 people from the company's Toronto studio are now laid off. According to MobileSyrup, the layoffs come as part of Ubisoft's continued restructuring into five distinct "creative houses."
Ubisoft issued a statement saying flatly, "Ubisoft Toronto will be reducing its workforce by 40 roles. The decision was not taken lightly and does not in any way reflect the talent, dedication, or contributions of the individuals affected." The statement continued on to say that those who are being laid off will get "comprehensive severance packages and robust career placement assistance."
Ubisoft Toronto has over 500 employees, making it one of Ubisoft's largest studios. Over the years, the teams within Toronto have worked on entries in various franchises such as Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. In 2024, Ubisoft Toronto, was added to the studios tasked with finishing the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. That title was reportedly very close to being finished before Ubisoft cancelled it entirely.
As part of the statement issued today by Ubisoft, they also wanted to reassure fans that the remake for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is still coming from Ubisoft Toronto. The studio will also continue to assist other studios on games, including continuing to work on Rainbow Six Siege with Ubisoft Montreal.
