According to a new report by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Sony is no longer planning to release PlayStation titles on PC. This shift comes about six years after PlayStation began to release major PlayStation 5 titles on PC, returning most major PlayStation releases as completely exclusive to the PlayStation platform.
Citing "people familiar with the company's plans," single-player titles will remain exclusive to PlayStation consoles. This means that titles such as Ghost of Yotei and Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5, while titles such as Marathon and Marvel Tokon will still see multiplatform releases.
In the case of Ghost of Yotei, the decision to scrap the PC release came in recent weeks. Bloomberg notes that a couple of PlayStation published titles, Death Stranding 2 and Kena: Scars of Kosmora, are still planned to be released on PC later this year.
In short, it seems as though PlayStation will keep their internally developed, single player focused titles exclusive to PlayStation going forward.
Bloomberg speculates on some of the likely reasons for this strategic shift from PlayStation.
One is that several recent PlayStation games have not sold well on PC. A faction within PlayStation has also expressed concern that releasing their games on PC risks damaging the console’s brand and will hurt sales of the PlayStation 5 and its successors, according to the people familiar with Sony’s inner workings.
Of course, there seems to be a big concern from Sony about how these PC releases will impact sales of the upcoming PlayStation 6. The fear is that people will not buy the PlayStation 6 if they can simply wait a while for the games to hit PC.
A potential third reason was also suggested by Schreier in the Bloomberg report: Microsoft's next Xbox console is rumored to use Windows and will be capable of running PC storefronts and playing PC games. It is very possible that some of PlayStation's executives aren't too thrilled about the potential for some of PlayStation's biggest franchises running on Xbox.
Now, PlayStation is going back to console exclusives. They will still publish multiplayer titles and a few third-party titles on PC, at least for now, but their brief stint of releasing their own single player blockbusters has apparently come to an end.
