Earlier this week, we shared news that companies such as Razer and Framework have halted sales of various laptop models to those living in the United States. This was done in response to the, at the time, 104% in total tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. With that tariff total now at 145% on goods imported from China, several other laptop manufacturers have also halted new laptop shipments to the United States.
The companies that are joining Razer and Framework in halting sales of some products in the U.S. include Lenovo, Dell, and HP. This is according to sources quoted by Commercial Times. New devices will not be sent to the U.S. for at least two weeks. The tariffs imposed by Trump are really hitting consumer electronics extremely hard thanks to how many components and fully assembled devices are shipped from China.
Industry experts say that they expect significant revenue drops for April for those that manufacture and sell laptops, PC components, smartphones, and networking gear. On the same day that Razer and Framework halted sales of laptops, memory chipmaker Micron announced that prices will be increasing for SSDs.
On the morning of April 9, reciprocal tariffs for roughly 57 countries went into effect. Later that same evening, Trump said that reciprocal tariffs above 10% would be paused for a period of 90 days for all countries but China. Even with this 90-day window, companies are weary of resuming normal business with the United States because of the complete lack of any certainty as to what Trump will do or say next.
The only thing that is certain right now, is the fact that several of Trump's already wealthy friends made an absolute killing on what many are calling obvious market manipulation and insider trading. For what little it will do, an investigation into this alleged insider trading and market manipulation is being called for by some senators.
