  • Former Diablo Devs Promise to Explore 'An Alternate Trajectory for Action RPGs'

Their new studio secured $4.5 million for a new game.

Moon Beast Productions is a development studio that formed in 2021 by a bunch of former Blizzard developers that worked on classic action RPGs like Diablo and Diablo 2. This week, the studio announced that they're hoping to continue their ARPG legacy thanks to securing $4.5 million in funding for a new game.

Moon Beast Productions announced that they hope to explore "an alternate trajectory for action RPGs." Chief creative officer Erich Schaefer was the lead designer on Diablo 1. Schaefer is also joined by CEO Phil Shenk and president Peter Hu, both of whom worked on Diablo 2. Beyond the Diablo franchise, the team is made up of members that worked on titles such as Torchlight, Hellgate: London, and Marvel Heroes Online.

The $4.5 million in funding comes from a number of different investors, which include Overwolf, 1AM Gaming, 1UP Ventures, Cohh Carnage, and founder of Zynga, Mark Pincus.

"For the past 20 years, we’ve dreamed of ARPG gameplay in more open, dynamic worlds. We finally have the technological capabilities and decades of design experience to bring those visions to life. We're going back to what made those early Diablo games feel so awesome but taking them in some cool, fresh directions." - Erich Schaefer
Details on this new game are very scarce at present time. We do know that the team is keen on supporting user created content. The studio is at least working on creating tools that will allow players to easily mod content or even create entirely new game modes. Shenk even compares their desire for mods to what happened with how the MOBA genre was born from Warcraft 3 mods.

Moon Beast hopes to share more details on this title later in 2025.

Review: Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred is Diablo at its Best
      by Shawn Zipay
      Refined to hellish perfection.

Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred feels like a fresh beginning for the action-RPG that released a little over a year ago. Despite receiving generally high praise from media outlets, including my own review, fans were quite vocal about the game needing some broad, sweeping changes to several core gameplay systems. Blizzard responded to these complaints by releasing a series of updates that drastically improved and reiterated on several core gameplay mechanics. ...
