New figures from Circana (formerly NPD) put Starfield as the top selling title for September 2023. Todd Howard's latest masterpiece, Starfield, beat out Mortal Kombat 1 and EA Sports FC 24 for the best selling title over the entire month. These sales figures are only for the United States. Globally, the picture might be quite different, but we just don't have the data to know for sure.
What makes Starfield's position at the top a bit surprising is the fact that Starfield was also available at release on Game Pass. Those Game Pass figures are not factored in to the sales numbers nor the sales chart provided by Circana. Digital sales of games are also not included in Circana's findings. It's also interesting to note that Starfield was only released on Xbox Series X|S and PC, while other titles that sit below it on the chart were largely multiplatform releases.
The top five games for September were all new releases in the month with the exception of Madden NFL 24. Madden NFL 24 took the top spot in August but fell to the fourth spot for September.
For all of 2023, Circana places Starfield as the seventh best selling game. It falls just behind Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and just ahead of Mortal Kombat 1. Hogwarts Legacy remains the top selling title for all of 2023, at least for now.
As far as hardware is concerned, the PlayStation 5 is still the best selling console of this gen. Xbox Series X|S is a firm second place.
