Meta revealed details on the upcoming Meta Quest 3 VR headset today. This new virtual reality set is out on October 10 at prices starting at $499.99 (USD) for a 128GB model. There is also a 512GB model for $649.99.
The Meta Quest 3 comes in at 515 grams, or 12 grams more than the Quest 2. It features six camera sensors that provide full color mixed reality features (10x the resolution of Quest 2, 2x the resolution of Quest Pro for passthrough). The screens are pancake optic LCD screens with a resolution of 2064x2209 per eye and support for 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates. The Quest 3 also features 8GB of RAM, compared to the 6GB on the Quest 2.
The chipset in the Quest 3 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2. The controllers have also been redesigned from the designs used with the Quest 1 and Quest 2. Each controller still use a single AA battery for power, have improved haptics, improved tactile feedback, and are more ergonomic.
As for battery life, Meta says that the Quest 3 will be able to hit 2.4 hours of gaming from a full charge. This is about on par with the Quest 2 even with the Quest 3 being a more powerful device. A full charge will take about 2 hours if going from 0% to 100%.
The Quest 3 also includes support for Wi-Fi 6E. The Quest 3 will also support PC VR games with support for both Quest Link and the Air Link.
Quest 2 support will continue for at least a little while after the Quest 3 is released. Meta says that there are games being developed that are compatible with both VR headsets. However, a specific "end of life" date for the Quest 2 was not disclosed.
Pre-orders on the Meta Quest 3 are live right now from the official website as well as places like Amazon, Walmart, and others. It appears like early orders will also get a copy of Asgard's Wrath 2 and a free subscription to Quest+.
