How many times have you read that headline?
A person wearing a bloody burlap sack over their head tries attacking another person using a chainsaw. The person being attacked is blocking the attack with a knife as sparks fly from the point of contact.

For the 12th(?) time now (excluding separate staggered regional release dates), Resident Evil 4 has been released! This time, it's different. This one isn't just a port of the original Resident Evil 4 on to another platform. This time, it's a full on remake and it. Is. Glorious.

That's right, the Resident Evil 4 remake is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Sorry Xbox One owners, the glory of Leon S. Kennedy's luscious locks are just too much for your hardware to handle. This one will run you $59.99 (USD) no matter which platform you choose.

Today's release is a from the ground up remake of the original 2005 game but reimagined for 2023 using the RE Engine. The use of the RE Engine allowed the team at Capcom to offer some modern gameplay improvements, as well as incorporating a reimagined storyline, and pretty visuals.

Resident Evil 4 joins Leon S. Kennedy six years after his hellish experiences in the biological disaster of Raccoon City. His unmatched resolve caused him to be recruited as an agent reporting directly to the president of the United States. With the experience of multiple missions under his belt, Leon is dispatched to rescue the president’s recently kidnapped daughter, Ashley Graham. Leon tracks her to a secluded European village, however after making first contact, he discovers a fervor beyond reason that grips the local populace.

During their harrowing escape, Leon and Ashley must navigate multiple dangerous environments controlled by the cult of Los Iluminados. After escaping the village, their perilous path takes them through an ancient castle, dilapidated mines, and more. Each step brings them closer to new dangers such as infected villagers, deranged cultists, and many more insidious enemies empowered by the Las Plagas parasite. Leon and Ashley must survive these foes while also deciphering the arcane designs of the hidden mechanisms, esoteric puzzles, and tantalizing secrets scattered around. Agents willing to delay their escape by indulging the enigmatic Merchant will also gain access to exclusive rewards in exchange for completing various tasks.
Resident Evil 4 is simultaneously familiar yet fresh. The main beats still seem to be intact but with enough differences that everything feels like a never before seen experience. The Ganado enemies have new attacks, new movements, and new abilities when going after Leon. Leon now also has the ability to parry enemy attacks with his knife as well as using the knife for stealth attacks from behind and even for finishing moves. The familiar attaché case has also been upgraded with a few selectable styles, as well as offering the ability to attach charms with various bonus properties (ex: A charm that has a chance to grant bonus ammo when crafting).

There is a Deluxe Edition available for $69.99 (USD) that offers new costumes, weapons, a treasure map, and more right off the bat.

Finally, Capcom announced in the early morning hours today that The Mercenaries will launch on April 7, 2023 as free DLC to all Resident Evil 4 owners. This is a lot sooner than most people expected it to arrive as I saw several speculating that The Mercenaries wouldn't be out for another 5-6 months after today's launch of the base game.

Having played for a few hours last night, I can safely say that Resident Evil 4 is fantastic. I highly recommend this one without reservation. If you want a small taste of the full game, the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo is still freely available to download.
