The renewal came before the third episode aired.

The third episode of The Last of Us HBO series aired this past weekend. However, the big news came a short time prior when it was announced that the show has been renewed for a second season.

The confirmation that The Last of Us getting a second season was shared through HBO's official Twitter account. This seems to fall in line with the idea that The Last of Us HBO series would get multiple seasons. The idea being that the first season of the show would largely cover the events of the first game, while The Last of Us Part 2 would be spread out across at least two seasons.

This HBO series has proven to be quite successful for HBO, Naughty Dog, and Sony. In addition to the show pulling in tons of viewers, sales of the first game went up 322% in some cases following the premiere episode.
