If you missed out on the first-ever Disney and Marvel Games Showcase at D23 2022, you really didn't miss much of anything. I mean it. That show was boring. We were given some updated looks at already announced games, some mobile stuff, a new visual novel Tron game, and some early mockups for a game that is so far away from being released it doesn't even have a title yet.
Let's start things off with the literal showstopper. Amy Hennig's studio, Skydance New Media, revealed their upcoming narrative-driven adventure game. The game will be focused mainly on Captain America and Black Panther but will feature four playable characters: Young Steve Rogers (Captain America), T'Challa's grandfather Azzuri, a U.S. soldier named Gabriel Jones, and Nanali the leader of the Wakandan Spy Network.
This game will take place during World War II and will see players going to places like Paris, Wakanda, and... more? The game doesn't have a name. There was no proper footage shown off for this game. This game is still probably years away from completion and this is the big reveal that Disney decided should end their show today.
Marvel's Midnight Suns has a new release date set for December 2, 2022 for next-gen consoles and PC. There's no release date for the Switch version. We were told that this game is getting a series of five short videos ahead of launch that will "provide backstory on the formation of the young core of the Midnight Suns."
There's a new Tron game coming! You wanted more Tron, yeah? A movie would be super cool! Hey, how's about a Tron visual novel instead, because that's all you're getting. The new game is Tron: Identity and it's in development from Bithell Games, the studio behind Thomas Was Alone. You play as a detective program "tasked with solving the mystery of an unprecedented crime." Look for this one to his PC and consoles in 2023.
Illusion Island is an upcoming co-op game featuring Mickey Mouse and other Disney favorites like Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. Each character will have unique abilities. For instance, Goofy can use a giant condiment bottle and Donald can swim. This Switch exclusive game will be a 2D platformer and will be out some time in 2023. This one will find players setting out to "explore the mysterious islands of Monoth and recover three mystical books to save the world."
There was a super short new video for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora shown off.
Pokemon Go developer Niantic announced Marvel World of Heroes. This will be a mobile based AR game where you can make your own hero and team up with Marvel heroes "in the real world." You can pre-register for this one at marvelworldofheroes.com ahead of its global launch in 2023.
Marvel Snap, the collectible card game, will be out on mobile and PC on October 18, 2022.
There was a new trailer for Return to Monkey Island. This adventure game will be out on September 19, 2022.
They're remastering the old, mid-90s platforming game Gargoyles for modern platforms and PC. It will have better visuals and controls.
There was also a new trailer for Aliens: Dark Descent. This squad-based, top-down shooter is out on PC and consoles in 2023. I literally cannot find a YouTube link for this right now.
A Toy Story realm is coming later this year to the newly released Disney Dreamlight Valley life-sim game.
A mobile MMORPG-shooter Avatar: Reckoning was revealed.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is getting a Galactic Edition on November 1 that includes 13 character packs, six of which are new.
Characters from Monsters Inc. like Sulley and Mike Wazowski will be added to the upcoming Disney Speedstorm racing game.
The squad-based RPG on mobile devices, Marvel Strike Force, will see Red Hulk added on September 13.
...And Mario Kart Tour, but I wanted to roast them first.
I know Second Dinner has Ben Brode and Hamilton Chu (former Hearthstone Game Director and Executive Producer respectively), but that's not exactly the same development team, and they won't have the resources that they did at Activision/Blizzard. If MARVEL SNAP can scratch the itch left behind by Marvel: War of Heroes, I'll consider it. I also will play without paying a single penny to see how far I can get, which is how I play any mobile game.
And I'll admit I did a double take when I saw Marvel: World of Heroes and thought Marvel is reusing a past title.
