Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is one of the best-known, most popular, and longest-running eSports games in the world. Indeed, the game from Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment has been around since 2012, which is when the eSports scene started to really kick off. Over the last decade, the industry has grown and is now worth over $1 billion.

CS:GO has played a massive part in this success, and it’s hard to imagine it ever being tipped off its perch as one of the top eSports games. However, the eSports scene is rapidly changing, and new games will come along in the years ahead. There’s a chance that interest in CS:GO could wane if something better comes along to replace it.

CS:GO is One of the Oldest Esports

Counter-Strike isn’t the oldest eSport in the industry, but it is one of the ones that has remained at the top for the longest period of time. The series existed before the release of Global Offensive, with the first release coming in 2000. The latest offering is actually the fourth game in the series. This suggests that when interest begins to diminish in this title, Valve will release a new option to stay at the forefront of the competitive gaming market.

Since Global Offensive was released, interest in the game shot up massively. It quickly became one of the definitive titles of this era of eSports, helping the industry with the transition from niche to mainstream. The game has more than 20 million monthly active players in 2022, and stats have shown that the game is still growing in stature. Indeed, despite new rivals coming about, the shooter is one of the top-played eSports games.

Valve Game is Boosted by Betting Industry

There are various reasons why CS:GO continues to top the charts in the eSports industry. It isn’t just a major draw for players, it also attracts a vast number of spectators. The betting industry has helped it to flourish as well, and it is one of the most popular eSports for people to stake on. This is because it is highly skill based, and bettors have access to a vast amount of information that can help inform their bets.

The fact that eSports markets are listed at some of the world’s best betting brands now highlights how far the industry has come. Indeed, sites like 888sport and Bet365 now have a wealth of eSports odds available, with CS:GO being one of the most popular. These are among the list of safe betting sites, regarded as such because of their high ratings and licences from established gaming authorities. They are also listed based on their offers and promotions, such as free bets for new customers.

The betting industry has traditionally boosted sports over the years, with football being a prime example of how integrated it is now. Many teams in the English Football League are sponsored by betting companies and wagering on the games helps to up the interest levels. The same effect is happening with eSports, and CS:GO is playing a huge part in that.

Hard to Say if it Will be Around Forever

While there is no sense that interest in CS:GO is declining, it’s unlikely that the eSport will be around forever. The competitive gaming industry is vastly different to traditional sports, and eSports athletes don’t need to specifically stick to one game. Some of the world’s best have been able to transition well between different options, as the skills from certain games can easily be applied elsewhere.

CS:GO won’t be around forever, but there will most likely be future offerings in the Counter-Strike series. They will use the popularity of their predecessors to stay at the top of the tree, but they may face stiffer competition from rival games. More eSports are getting added every year, giving players and spectators a vast number of options to choose from. This means more rivalry between the top games, and developers will have to try even harder to keep attracting attention.

CS:GO is a prime example of how to stay relevant as an eSport despite other new games growing up around it. It won’t live forever in its current form, but the series could go on indefinitely. There’s no doubt that it has done a lot for the industry already and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
