After just one season, the Resident Evil Netflix series has been canceled. The first, and only, eight episodes made their initial debut on July 14. This report came first from Deadline.
The Resident Evil series did debut in the top 3 rankings on Netflix, but quickly fell off the charts after its third week. The series was panned by critics and fans of the Resident Evil franchise alike. It earned a pitiful 55% critical consensus at Rotten Tomatoes and just 27% from the audience.
Resident Evil's Netflix adaptation was largely an original story. There were some tiny bits here and there that tracked with the original franchise, along with a couple of references. The show covered two timelines. The first one is where Albert Wesker and his two daughters move to New Raccoon City, a town founded by the Umbrella Corporation. The other storyline takes place 14 years later when the T-Virus turns people into the walking dead and other biological monstrosities.
