June 8th is the release date for the "Caves & Cliffs: Part 1" mega-update for Minecraft. This date was announced today by Mojang alongside a nice write-up on some of things fans can expect to see when this release comes out.

Caves & Cliffs will be out on the 8th for the Java and Bedrock versions of the game. This means the update will be out for the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Windows 10 for Bedrock and on Windows, macOS, and Linux for Java.

The full list of upcoming changes to Minecraft can be found via the Official Minecraft Wiki. Otherwise, you can get some not-so-subtle clues on what's coming June 8 by reading the following excerpt from Mojang.

It's important to keep in mind that not everything listed on the Wiki page will be included in part 1. There is still a lot more to come for Caves & Cliffs when part 2 hits in the future.

The good news is that the update also includes the lovely and totally-harmless-unless-you're-a-drowned axolotls! Unfortunately, they’re confined to either water or a bucket, so they won’t be able to join my anti-goat crusade.

But that’s not all – the once Minecraft Earth-exclusive mob, the glow squid, will also be gracing our oceans! While I was Team Mooshroom (another petition I need to get around to), I’m just glad this one won’t be rewarding my kindness with a brutal shove. Plus, it’s so pretty it might just motivate me to build that huge aquarium I’ve always wanted.

And what would a Minecraft update be without blocks? This round, there’s plenty of them. Some of them will just pop up in the world, while others might be a bit trickier to discover. If instant gratification is your thing, then you can always switch to Creative mode, where you can access them all, from amethyst to dripleaves, and the highly anticipated copper block! Much like my referential humor, this block shows its age after being placed in the world, giving your builds a sense of history and a more organic feel. However, I think the most exciting thing for me is the spyglass!

Microsoft Makes Java and Bedrock Editions of Minecraft a Single Purchase
      by Shawn Zipay
You can still play each version separately.

The tale of the two separate versions of Minecraft on PC is an odd one. A while back, if you had purchased the Java version of Minecraft prior to October 19, 2018, you were able to claim a free copy of the non-Java built Bedrock Edition for free. All you had to do was tie your existing Mojang account to your Microsoft account.

If you didn't own the game prior to that 2018 cutoff date, you could still get Minecraft, but you apparently...
