Today, Media Molecule announced that the game they have been working on for around 7 years now is finally ready for release. Dreams was first announced back in 2013 with a teaser announcement that hit as early as Gamescom 2012. The studio that brought the world Tearaway and LittleBigPlanet has been working on a game where the only limitations are your imagination and the hardware of the PlayStation 4.
At its heart, Dreams is a game that allows you to play and create other games. It's a game creation tool that features game logic systems, questing, world building, 3D sculpting, custom music, art creation, and so much more. During the lengthy beta for the game, people have created full, playable worlds. Users have created insanely detailed and graphically impressive scenes just for the sake of making art. Users have made RPGs complete with questing and leveling. There have even been multi-level full campaigns that users have created. Creations can appear 3D, 2D, open world, side-scrolling, top-down, isometric, first-person, third-person, cute, scary, bright, dark, moody, realistic, abstract, and the list goes on.
The major focus is on sharing these creations with the world. If you wanted, you never have to create your own content. You could instead just play the content created by the other users. It is (theoretically) an endless stream of content that you would have access to. Of course, not all of it will be amazing.
Today's "gone gold" announcement for Dreams ensures that the game will hit its planned release set for February 14, 2020. Dreams is, at least for now, a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Dreams will retail for $39.99 (USD) and can be pre-ordered via the PlayStation Store.
