XBOX: 1,600 Layoffs Today, Another 1,600 Over the Next Year, Four Studios Now Independent or Sold, Arkane in Limbo

More broadly, Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs.

Today, Microsoft is laying off 2.1% of its workforce. This equates to 4,800 people that are being let go. The company's XBOX division is cutting about 20% of its entire workforce. All of this is being done in an effort to cut costs due to rising prices and expenses brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).

As a quick reminder: Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on AI in 2026. In 2025, the company spent $80 billion...

PlayStation is Killing Physical Game Discs

Digital only after January 2028.

Starting January 2028, Sony will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation game releases. All games released in January 2028 and after will be available only through digital stores such as the PlayStation Store.

Sony attempts to justify this move by claiming it's a "natural direction" in order to "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."...

Lord of Hatred Review: Diablo 4 Finally Finds Its Final Form

This is Diablo 4 at its best. I mean it this time. For real.

Returning to the world of Sanctuary for this latest chapter feels like a true homecoming for those of us who have spent hundreds of hours traversing its dark and unforgiving landscapes since the base game launched back in 2023. The release of the Lord of Hatred expansion marks a significant step forward in the narrative that was originally set in motion during the initial campaign and furthered by the events of the Vesse...

Valve Offering Refunds on Earth: Year 2066

Earth: Year 2066 was not a good game. Sure, it was still an Early Access release but it was disturbingly bad even for that stage of release. It didn't help that the developer constantly deleted threads and posts from the Steam Community section for the game.

Chris, an employee at Valve, stepped in today to announce that they are issuing refunds to those who purchased the game and have pulled the game from Early Access.
On Steam, developers make their own decisions about promotion,

  • Garry's Mod LUA Exploit Leads to Spread of "Coughing Virus"

Garry's Mod LUA Exploit Leads to Spread of "Coughing Virus"

Earlier today, some malicious code started to spread through many Garry's Mod servers. This code forced a server to push a .dll file to a user's computer. This would then spam the word "cough" to friends of the affected player and also through in-game chat. It would also change the affected user's name and also append exclamation points to the front of affected servers (so as to appear first on the server browser when sorting by name). This seems to have been the extent of the damages ca...

New Half-Life Segmented Speed Run Record Clocks in at Under 21 Minutes

Previously, the record for a Half-Life segmented speed run was sitting at 29 minutes and 41 seconds. The newest record, uploaded just yesterday, sits at 20 minutes and 41 seconds. Shaving off nine minutes in a run like this is absolutely insane.

Technical details: - This run sets the new world record for a segmented speedrun of Half-Life on Hard difficulty with an improvement of 9 minutes. (29:41 » 20:41). - Runners, in order of total amount of segments: quadrazid, CRASH FORT,

Rumor: Steam Controller Available in October or November

A source close to PC Gamer has informed them that Valve's Steam Controller will be released in either October or November of 2014. This claim comes from a "trusted hardware source with knowledge of Valve's Steam Machines." Their source continued on to say that the completion of the controller would be the "final piece that would precede the availability of most Steam Machines." That seems to indicate that the Steam Machines themselves would then start to roll out at the end of 2014...

  • Developer Says Steam Greenlight Going Away within a Year as Steam Becomes More Open

According to Tweets (via CVG) made by Jonathan Biddle of Curve Studios, Valve may be getting rid of their Steam Greenlight service within the next 12 months.
We met with Valve at GDC, and they say Greenlight will be gone within 12 months. They'll still offer curated space, but otherwise be open.
This tends to go hand in hand with what Gabe Newell said a couple of months ago about wanting to make Greenlight go away as Steam evolves. This also ties in with how Valve is giving m...

  • How Many Games Did You Complete in 2025?
    by Shawn Zipay
Make up your own definition of "complete."

Was 2025 a big year for game completions for you, or were you more of a "stick to one never-ending, live-service game for the entire year" sort of player?

For this, you can take whatever definition you want as a game "completion." Beat the main story? Earned 100% of the game's achievements? Or simply played enough that you're satisfied with what you accomplished and have no plans to return any time...
