  • Valve Officially Launches Steam Game Recording

Seasoned to possible perfection after four months.

Coming about four months since its beta release, Steam Game Recording is now officially available for all Steam users. This is a new system built into Steam that will let you record, replay, and share clips from games you play through Steam.

This does seem to require a new update to the Steam client, so be sure to check for updates if you have been running Steam all day and don't yet see this feature. You'll be able to access the options under "Game Recordings" within your Steam client settings. By default the continuous recording is set to save the last 120 minutes (2 hours) of gameplay. Unless you're recording entire sessions for every game, you may want to adjust this to a lower amount to save on some disk space. It seems like the lowest the continuous recording option can go is 5 minutes. You can also customize settings on a per game basis.

Valve says that since that June launch of the beta, they have added in things like:
    • Game-specific settings
    • A quick capture hotkey option
    • Advanced export options
    • Session view - A way to view your footage in the new Recordings & Screenshot manager with game-specific tags and data

      by Shawn Zipay
Over a month of beta testing later, the update is ready for prime time.

In late April, Valve pushed out a beta update for the Steam client. This update was far more extensive than mere bug fixes or tiny tweaks here and there. This update has just left beta and is out for everyone using Steam.
