Where there's a will, there's a way.

Apparently the big news today is word that once you die, you cannot will your Steam account to someone else. If you couldn't already tell, today is a holiday here in the States, which means it's a slow news day. It's a very slow news day.

This idea of willing your Steam account to someone when you inevitably pass into an eternity of absolute nothingness was brought up by a ResetEra user, delete12345. This person had asked Steam Support if they could put their Steam library into their will. The idea being that once delete12345 passes on, their Steam library could be sent to whomever it was that they named as beneficiary in said will.

Steam Support's response was a rather firm "no."

Of course, there's no stopping you from just giving your login credentials to someone else as you lay on your deathbed. That person could then just log in with the information, once they're done grieving of course, and change the contact details and payment options to their own. Let's just keep this information between us though, yeah? You wouldn't want Valve to hear about this incredibly obvious loophole that I'm sure they are completely unaware of.

Honestly, there are probably some legal reasons why you can't just will your digital library to someone else. It's probably related to licensing for the games or something and trying to sort that out would probably be a real nightmare for Valve, developers, and publishers alike. Then that's not even taking into account different world regions with various restrictions and censorships and all that stuff.

Before you kick the bucket, maybe just think about using the new Steam Families feature? Valve has had a beta running for this since March 18, 2024 and it's basically an easy way to share your game library with your family and nobody else.
