Facepunch Studios is hard at work developing a spiritual Garry's Mod successor that they're calling s&box. The sandbox style game started life out as an Unreal Engine project but has since swapped to using Source 2, the engine developed by Valve that is currently in use in games like Dota 2 and Half-Life: Alyx.

Thanks to the limited public availability of s&box to eager developers, Source 2 is starting to get into the hands of modding communities. One of those communities is a group that is dedicating themselves to bringing Team Fortress 2 over to the Source 2 engine. The team behind this project have started to call their project Team Fortress: Source 2.

As their site states, the team has a goal to "remake, improve, iterate, and create a new Team Fortress experience on Source 2 engine using s&box."

There are currently a few tools available that can aid in the process of bringing assets from Source over to Source 2, but the team has already run into a few issues. For instance, the tools can't really interact with s&box, meaning that a lot of the assets "need to be fixed manually." A lot of the issues seem to revolve around the porting of particles and skyboxes specifically.

So far, the team has brought over the Soldier, Scout, Pyro, Demoman, and Sniper from the original game. The team believes that due to the modular and moddable nature of s&box, creators may be able to one day add in their own custom classes to Team Fortress: Source 2 later on.

The TF: Source 2 team currently sits at 23 people, but they're still searching for more people that are eager to help out.
